The abrasive is an essential component of the sandblasting process. Each grain of abrasive has its own unique set of physical characteristics, including hardness, density, shape, and purity. These characteristics dictate how well the surface will be cleaned, profiled, or prepared for a coating.

Harder abrasives like aluminium oxide tend to be aggressive and can be used effectively for removing heavy corrosion from surfaces. Softer abrasives such as glass beads do not etch surfaces, which makes them ideal for producing smooth finishes on sensitive equipment. The size and shape of individual grains also impact performance; angular grains will yield deeper profiles than rounded grains, which will produce a polished finish.
